Ironically enough, just after posting my favorite movies of 2008 and complaining that no film really stood out, we saw The Wrestler which is clearly the winner of 2008 so far.

Since Pi (1998) and after the violent Requiem for a Dream (2000), Mr Aronofsky matured a lot. He stopped fiddling with film making and special effects to start using them to tell the story he wants to share.

The plot is relatively simple but the power and the magic of cinema give wings to the film. They come from the perfect symbiosis between acting, music/sound design, direction & photography. The story is told subtly, through the details of everyday life and let you slowly slip into Randy’s world. My only complain here is that the daughter was not necessary and add superfluous pathos.

Mickey Rourke is astonishing in the role of Randy “The Ram” Robinson. Not only his acting is fantastic but his body, his past, his wounds greatly serve the movie.

~ Highly recommended ~

Note: I noticed that often enough, at the beginning of the scene, it seems like the camera is rolling BEFORE the action really starts. I’m wondering why it has been edited this way? Maybe to give a certain rhythm to the movie.
