With Avalon (2001), I was very sad to see Director Oshii loosing himself in Computer Graphics, abstract/esoteric/metaphysic plot and blur filters. I really hated the movie, maybe because I was expected a lot from it.
Ghost In The Shell (one of my favorite animes and an excellent film) already had those elements but Oshii managed to have a perfect balance between them, making the film both understandable & deep, with multiple levels of reading.
Seven years later, I’m happy to see Sky Crawlers where Oshii came back to the recipe that made GITS so great. Even if the level of success is way not as high for Sky Crawlers, it is still an enjoyable show.
The pace is a bit too slow (yes, even for me!) but the ambiance that emanates from it is really good.
Technically, the mix between pure, assumed CG and traditional animation is well done. I loved all the flying scenes, especially the inside cockpit views. They give a lot of space to the movie and are my favorite parts.
Note: I haven’t got the chance to see GITS 2.
